One more Rain Forest under Threat in Kerala

It is heard that the Eranakulam district administration has identified 1,000 acres at Kuttampuzha panchayat in Kothamangalam for the proposed naval armament depot (NAD) and a recommendation for the same will be forwarded o the state government for approval.

The administration identified the 2 km stretch of forest land between Kuttampuzha bridge and Annathara after visiting four sites in the district following the Union governments directive. The other places under consideration were Ayyampuzha,Bhoothathankettu and Edakkattuvayal. The proposed area is very near to the Historic Bhoothathan Kettu Dam and a good Rain forest.

The recommendation identifying Kuttampuzha will be sent to the state forest department for approval. It is up to the state government to take a final call on it.

It is also heard that only 15% of the land will be utilized for the project in the initial stage and the main construction activities will be underground.

As per the reports comes out if it is true one more rain forest will lost us for ever.....

PERIYAR TIGER RESEVE BAGGED THE UNDP HONOUR. ! Congrats Them

In a unique initiative to recognise outstanding work in biodiversity conservation at the grass roots level, the Union Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have jointly presented awards to models of biodiversity governance from across the country.

The awards were presented to the representatives of the winners at a ceremony held on the sidelines of the ongoing UN convention on biological diversity here last night.

A press release from the UNDP quoted Union Environment Minister Jayanti Natarajan, as saying "Conserving biodiversity and harnessing it on a sustainable basis is critical for realising development goals. Biodiversity governance in India needs to enable this on a sustained and equitable basis."

Welcoming the support of UNDP as a partner, the minister announced that the India Biodiversity Awards will now be an annual feature, to mark International Biodiversity Day on May 22 each year.

The winners of the awards were: Pir Jahania Jungle Suraksha Samiti from Odisha in the community stewardship category, Shankarpur Village Gram Panchayat from Maharashtra in the category of decentralised management, Van Utthan Sansthan from Rajasthan in the category of co-management and Periyar Tiger Reserve in the protected areas category.

The awards aim to address the relationship between biodiversity loss, livelihood challenges of local communities and sustainable development, the UNDP release said.

The India Biodiversity Awards received 150 nominations from across the country based on a call for nominations earlier this year. A six-member jury for the awards was headed by eminent agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan.

Congrats the Staff of PTR...!!!

Promote Vegetarianism

1st October EVERY Year is World Vegetarian Day and World Vegetarian Awareness Month - October.

World vegetarian day has been observed since 1977 bringing together vegetarians from all over the world for a common cause. It brings awareness to the ethical, environmental, health and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. We're observing growing trends, especially since Foot and Mouth and Mad Cow diseases, but about one million people a year become vegetarians in the US alone, and millions in Europe, Australasia and in our own India too... Everything that we are doing is making a difference, and every little bit helps.

Where you find any group trying to promote this noble cause please give your support. Contact your local temple or community and find out how you can get involved this year.

"To promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism." It brings awareness to the ethicalenvironmentalhealth and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle.

World Vegetarian Day, October 1, is the annual kick-off of Vegetarian Awareness Month. Make a difference this October by informing others about the benefits of vegetarianism. You will be helping to create a better world because vegetarian diets have proven health benefits, save animals’ lives and help to preserve the Earth.
It’s easy to get involved. Display our free, colorful, informative poster in your community. You can post it at a local store, office, coffee shop, library, school or other suitable location. Use it as a great way to start a discussion about the benefits of vegetarianism with the people in your lifestyle.

A hearty vegetarian day wishes to all of you.

TAKE PERIYACHOLA AS ECOLOGICALLY FROGAIL

Periya Chola is located near by Nelliyampathy. It was known as Gemini Estate.
Total extend of Peria chola is approximately   600 acres. The survey no. of Periya Chola is 870.
As per the vesting and assignment notification the entire area in sy,no 870 was vested with the Government.Unfortunately the area is under the possession of private parties....
Before vesting the area was under lease. Now it was under the possession of more than 100 peoples. In that area around 60 acres are taken by the forest department under EFL Act.

The area is more important because it is surrounded all the sides by forest area.Parambikulam Tiger Reserve of Kerala and Indira Gandhi Tiger Reserve of Tamil nadu are sharing boundaries with it.Inside the Forest these illegal possession is very danger to Tiger Reserves.....

So it is very urgent to declare the entire PERIYA CHOLA as EFL......

CREATE A GREEN FOREST AT THE HEART OF THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

Space is at a premium at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, and the Government is on the look-out for an ideal location to move the zoo outside the city.
Answering questions in the Assembly on Friday, Museum and Zoos Minister P K Jayalakshmi said the Government is searching for land to relocate the zoo, which shares 53 crammed acres with the Napier Museum and surrounding park.
The Thrissur Zoo is in the process of being relocated in 306 acres at Puthoor, where a zoological park is to be developed, she said. Several members also pointed out that it would be advisable to move the zoo out of the city limits.
The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo being under-staffed in terms of veterinarians, the department is examining a proposal to appoint one more vet and create posts for a biologist, public relations officer, lab technician and a livestock inspector, the Minister said in a written reply. The Central Zoo Authority has, in principle, approved the master plan for the development of the City Zoo, the Minister said.
As part of streamlining facilities here, a central committee led by Central Zoo Authority member secretary B S Bonal had recommended sectioning off the animals and birds into three categories - those belonging to the Western Ghats, those from Africa and thirdly, other foreign varieties. K Muraleedharan, who is also the local MLA, opined in the House on Friday that this was unscientific.

It is good but beware of encroachment ......
If the zoo is shifted the whole area should be allowed to create good Green Forest....
Then only the city can relaxed .......

SAVE NELLIYAMPATHY SATHYAGRAHAM

ONLY RESTRICTED TOURISM CAN ALLOW ON TIGER RESERVES

The Supreme Court order banning tourism in core areas of tiger reserves till further directions has evoked sharp reactions from forest officials and conservationists the state.“Whatever may the statistics or data... the fact of the matter is that tigers are on the verge of extinction... till final directions are issued by this court with respect to the guidelines by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and the National Tiger Conservation Authority, the core areas in tiger reserves will not be used for tourism,”.

Most felt that regulated tourism is a better option than a complete ban."Regulated tourism is a much better option. We have over the past 10 years controlled much of tourism activities in Parambikulam Tiger Reserve of Kerala. At day time, only limited vehicles of the Parambikulam FDA  go into the park. Such an order will have far-reaching effect on an entire community that has grown up on tourism activities in the park. Besides, as of now,It is strictly restricted only on Tourism- Buffer zone.

As my view it is more helpful for conservation ......
It can provide about 240 peoples to job security...

SAY NO TO ATHIRAPPALLY HYDRO ELECTRIC PROJECT

The importance of Vazhachal and Athirappally is not predictable.  Because It is the part of the  Western Ghats. The last study report of Madhav Gadgil Committee  explains and approves this..
But some people of Kerala especially KSEB officials want to destroy that Biodiversity….
They need a Hydro Electric Power Project there …..
But you should know these things also……
At present the project needs  2000 crore rupees…
But it can produce a maximam of 1500 lakh unit only…
As per the study we can see the cost of electricity from there will become above   Rs 15/-per unit…
Then think is it affordable to us……
IT CAN ONLY DESTROY OUR NATURE…..
So SAY NO TO ATHIRAPPALLY HYDRO ELECTRIC PROJECT

ENVIRONMENT DAY MESSAGE

June 5 is “world environment day” and it is celebrated to create awareness of environmental issues.  Kerala celebrated this day by planting couple of trees in schools and organizing meetings across the state.  Some also think that having a counting of Trees would help in protecting the environment. Unfortunately many of the suggestions put forward by environmentalists are impractical and without any regard to economic and social situation of our country and state.  What I think is that we need to be pragmatic in environmental protection. Here are some practical ways of protecting our environment,

Improve public transport-  For example consider Trivandrum city. If there is good and comfortable public transport, a lot of people will abandon cars/bikes and would take the public transport. Unfortunately, forget about comfortable travel, if you are a female, you will be harassed in KSRTC buses in the city. The problem is the overcrowding of buses. Government won’t allow private buses to operate, they won’t increase bus schedules or plan about metro rail in the near future. Same applies for road infrastructure. There is a lot of resistance against widening a road to a two lane road in the city (from enviornmentalists, business interests etc.). There are many trees in Trivandrum city standing almost in the middle of the road since some idiots oppose removal of them.Whenever a road is widened government could take enough land on both sides to plant trees as well. For every tree that is removed, two can be planted. In fact I am ready to pay a tax for it, if they are ready to acquire enough land on both sides of the road.

Waste collection & management- Except in city areas, there is no mechanism for waste collection/disposal. In trivandrum city, corporation runs a good waste collection group which charges just Rs.30 per month. This should be extended to other cities.  Also there should be large collection bins across the city. Lack of these waste collection bins forces people to dump waste on the road during night or throw it on a river or lake during night.

Deforestation- The main reason for deforestation is the interference of humans in many ways such as firewood collection, cattle feeding, fire, illicit felling ,encroachment etc....  Now a days the participatory forest management program me is more helpful in forest management and forest protection.

Limiting the use of plastic Many environmentalists behave as if plastic is the worst thing invented by humans. In fact it is one of the most useful things that we have invented. However uncontrolled use of plastic is a problem. For example, in retail shops there is no need to use lightweight plastic bags and could be replaced by cloth bags. Now a days more of the retail chains is giving out cloth bags for Rs. 1 per bag and it is a good idea. Whenever people adopt such good practises, government, media and other organizations should encourage it.  But if someone says we should ban plastic buckets, I would call him an idiot.
Protection of waterways – This is one of the most important thing and is overlooked a lot. The pollution of rivers is one of the most serious problems we face. Discharge of untreated waste into river is one problem. Another is the direct plumbing of sewage to the rivers. Both should be banned. Unfortunately widespread corruption means you cannot do anything until you address the corruption problem.
But this should never prevent us implementing hydroelectric power plants. The alternatives in this case such as thermal plants or nuclear power plants is never a comparable solution. Whatever power conservation we do, our power requirements are going to double in the near future. If we don’t adopt the cheapest and most nature friendly solution (hydroelectric plants) we are doomed. Another interesting aspect is that a power plant and its associated administrative setup is quite useful in fighting corruption in forest department. For example, take the Idukky power project. After the commissioning of Moolamattom powerhouse, conservation of the forest around it has been successful.

Pesticides- Pesticides is the biggest threat to both environment and health of the people. Uncontrolled use of it is causing both direct damage and also slow poisoning of the population. There needs to be a concerted effort to limit the use of pesticides and promote traditional/organic ways of controlling pests. Unfortunately this is an area where environmentalists are a complete failure. Instead of blocking progress and development activities they should focus on things like pesticide control.  You are able to stop railway lines and hydro electric plants but why can’t you stop pesticide abuse or the new phenomenon of genetically modified foods? Why are you going after coca-cola which contains 0.001% of pesticides while the drinking water supplied by government probably contains 1000 times more pesticide?

Awareness Programmes - Now in Kerala more awareness programmes are conducted by NGOs for the sake of our Environment. We MA PRITHVI is one of the leading group to conduct awareness about nature through out the year. Now in Kerala there is a common platform for the Nature Lovers in the name of GREEN COMMUNITY.All these efforts in the 50th ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF THE BOOK "THE SILENT SPRING" WRITTEN BY RAICHEL CARSON  shows that Kerala has a good future in Nature Conservation.

Thankfully we don’t need to worry about large scale pollution from industries. Our comrades have ensured that no industry can run in Kerala for a long time!

For Earth Day 2011 in India, events were organized in 170 cities and districts in each of the 29 states. Several thousand Indians participated, a majority of whom pledged an act of green to help reduce carbon emission and promote sustainability, energizing the “new” global environmental movement.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Education is the key component of any environmental initiative, as it provides for sustainability and prepares future generations of global citizens. We are helping teachers incorporate those elements into their classroom through online resources, curriculum and activities that engage the entire community.
WOMEN & GREEN ECONOMY
Women in India are now in top positions in government, business and non-governmental organizations. Earth Day Network – India is creating a cadre of women leaders to join a network of peers around the world that are creating a policy platform to promote women's role in accelerating a transition to a green economy.  These findings will be presented at the United Nations Earth Summit in 2012.
CAPACITY BUILDING & TRAINING
Using the ‘train-the-trainer’ model for developing vital skills and abilities, Earth Day Network will empower non-governmental organizations and educators to advocate for and protect the environment. We are also building a network of environmentally-active youth through our Civic Education Program, which supports teachers as they implement green school and community-based environmental projects.
EARTH DAY - INDIA
Every April 22, Earth Day provides a tremendous opportunity to engage all levels of civil society in the environmental movement. The 41st anniversary of Earth Day in 2011 was observed in cities around India, including New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai through commemorative Mother Earth concerts, community service, and tree-planting projects. Earth Day 2012 in India aims to activate over a million people to participate in local, regional and country-wide projects.
